Nathan Sutton has been named Head Coach for Boys Basketball at GC!! Please join us in congratulating him! After a difficult search for a coaching candidate who will provide longevity and consistency to the program – Nathan Sutton was approached to step up to the task. After discussion with his family, some sleepless nights, and deep soul searching, Sutton accepted the position to head up the program so dear to his heart.

Sutton says that when his name came up in conversation that he was taken by surprise, as he hadn’t thought of being a coach in this chapter of his life. In the past several years, his evenings have been occupied by an impressive schedule of officiating basketball games at the state and collegiate level. “Life is all about chapters,” said Sutton. He continued, “I didn’t understand why I felt like I was ready to turn the page on the referee chapter of my life… but now I know why.”

When we asked what was the deciding factor in beginning a new chapter in his life, his answer was exactly what you’d expect from a guy many call “Mr. Greenup County”…

“Our kids need commitment… and I’m not going anywhere. They need commitment, structure, and hard work. In the past 15 years or so there’s been some turnover with coaches… I’ve been watching Greenup basketball since I was 8 years old sitting on the bleachers… so Greenup basketball holds a special place in my heart. I don’t know how many wins that will translate to, but I want to do well and I’m here to stay. I’m flooded with emotions about something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.”

This lifelong Musketeer has been proudly wearing his green and gold since kindergarten, and is now a district administrator. Sutton is a 2000 graduate of Greenup County. As a student, he was part of the team that won 4 district championships and a regional championship. He went on to play 2 years of college basketball, and began coaching shortly afterward. He started coaching middle school and later became assistant high school coach for 7 years while he was a teacher at Greenup County High School.

He’s humble, but we know special things will happen for our students and the program in general. Sutton looks forward to getting started with a new chapter in his life that feels like, “all roads were leading to”. Congratulations, Mr. Sutton! We can’t wait to see the energy moving through the Greenhouse this upcoming season!
