This Friday we will hold a ceremony officially proclaiming GC a “Purple Heart School District.” A local veteran and Purple Heart recipient brought this gesture to our attention, and we didn’t hesitate to proceed. It is a way we can show our appreciation for GC’s military heritage and wounded veterans. We will also be celebrating the Marine Corps birthday, as our JROTC is a Marine Corps JROTC. We deeply value our JROTC program and all it does for student character. We invite any veterans, Purple Heart recipients, and their families to join us at GCHS at 2:00 on Friday, November 17. #BelieveInGC

This is hard to believe!! Did you know that there are 44 GC busses that drive 2,800 miles PER DAY? For reference, that is from Greenup County to Los Angeles with enough miles left over to backtrack to Tucson, Arizona! It cumulated to over a half million miles last year alone. Thank you to Mr. Fletcher (Dir. of Transportation) and our amazing bus drivers for all the miles they travel to make sure GC students get to school each day! #BelieveInGC

How COOL?! This snow plow was designed and painted by GC students! Kentucky Transportation just picked it up, and it’ll be used this season right here in our area! Great job Audrey Hall, Gabe Cox, and Madison Allen! Be on the lookout this winter! #BelieveInGC

Another GC teacher with accolades to celebrate! Congrats to Tiffany Boggs for being named an "Innovative Teacher Fellow" by KDE's Innovative Learning Network! As KDE (Kentucky Department of Education) states, "There are many schools and districts in Kentucky implementing learner-centered practices and trailblazing innovative strategies. We’re wrapping up National School Principals Month, and we want to take a moment to thank our amazing principals! With so many moving parts involved in running a school, they work incredibly hard for the benefit of our students! Thank you, GC principals! #BelieveInGC

You never know how far a child’s idea can go!! Students in Ms. Armstrong’s classes are coming up with solutions to problems that resonate with them! In this PBL (Project Based Learning) activity, students work in a group to identify a problem, brainstorm solutions, and create a way to help solve that problem. For example, one group wants to create a phone app to help solve a problem. They presented their ideas to various adults who volunteered to give them feedback to drive their solutions. It was engaging enough that the volunteers didn’t want to leave!! #BelieveInGC

These 4 Cross Country runners are advancing to state! Help us congratulate Isaiah Adkins, Cody Brown, Elijah Brown, and Morgan Collier for this great accomplishment!! They’ll be competing on Saturday at Lexington Horse Park! #BelieveInGC

On Friday, October 20, Wurtland Elementary (WES) and Wurtland Middle (WMS) will be participating in a safety simulation in conjunction with the Greenup County Public Safety agency. While the entire simulation will take place between 8am-1pm, the Wurtland schools will only be participating for around 20 minutes. In this simulation, various community agencies will collaborate to increase our community's preparedness for a potential hazardous material incident. If you see a large number of emergency vehicles at Wurtland Elementary and Middle on Friday morning, please remember that this is for their participation in the simulation. Again this is only a simulation for the sake of our community's safety and preparedness, and we look forward to contributing. It's KY Safe Schools Week, and we're thrilled that Judge Executive, Bobby Hall, officially signed a proclamation for it to be the same here in Greenup County! Our students participate throughout the week by focusing on school safety, preparing for emergencies, being a good digital citizen, and showing kindness! Extremely exciting news! Mr. Kevin Campbell was recently invited to Capital Hill in Washington, D.C. to speak about virtual reality (VR) being used in GC classrooms! He was invited to speak through “Jobs for the Future”, who sponsored VR technology in GC schools and were impressed with the results! Policy makers heard Mr. Campbell as he advocated for GC students having the best technology possible in classrooms, “because we want our students to have an edge in taking steps toward their future.” Mr. Campbell explained that VR seems to take away the fear of failure. “VR allows students to have experiences without being so intimidated. I find that students are more eager to participate in new experiences when using VR, and I was excited to share this on Capital Hill.” Congratulations on this great experience, Mr. Campbell. A huge congratulations to these 3 Musketeers, who have earned an all-expense paid educational trip to Puerto Rico courtesy of Upward Bound Math Science!! They earned this opportunity through an essay competition, and expressed immense gratitude to Upward Bound Math-Science, Shawnee State University, and the staff members at GC who have supported their journey! Many people don't know what Upward Bound is all about. Raini (pictured center) explained that, in short, it provides opportunities to support students in becoming first-generation college students. These GC students will make up 3 of the 8 students from different districts that will go! All of us here at GC sincerely appreciate the work that they do for our very grateful and deserving students! Thank you to all involved! Please help us congratulate Trey, Raini, and Brandon for earning the opportunity of a lifetime! #BelieveInGC
