This is a very difficult process in which Cassie spent around 2 years proving herself as being dedicated to the highest standard of teaching! Greenup Schools will dismiss at noon today 4/11/24 for impending storms predicted to have 50MPH winds and cause flooding. Storms from last week have also created this need, as many roads were just repaired but could wash out easily. All school events this evening are canceled. Please stay safe Musketeers!

This is Cris and Maycee, and their friendship will inspire you to no end! That bright smile on the left is Cris! He has nothing but wonderful things to say about his experiences at school, but he won’t use words to tell you. Cris has special needs and is non-verbal, so he uses a special app on his iPad to talk. While he wasn’t too outgoing in the past, he is thriving now! The newfound “pep in Cris’ step” started with his friend Maycee, who you see on the right. You’ll notice her kind eyes, and that is a true indicator of what a wonderful young lady she is. You see, Maycee has made it a point to include Cris, talk to him, and bring him out of his shell. It’s hard to tell which came first, his confidence or his new friends, but Cris is surrounded by a class of students who have made his days so much happier. Cris’ grandma will tell you, “he loves school and it’s been great to see.” Teachers noticed that Maycee went out of her way to talk to Chris. Her teacher, Mrs. Roberts, said that she noticed Maycee asking Cris to use his iPad to talk to her. Instead of just moving on because Cris takes a little longer to communicate, Maycee patiently encouraged Cris to communicate with his iPad – and wonderful conversations began to take place! Mrs. Roberts, one of Maycee’s teachers, has watched in amazement as it has all unfolded. She says that it didn’t take long for other students to want to talk to Cris and befriend him. “Maycee and Cris’ friendship has drawn other students in… at recess there will be 7 or 8 kids all around Cris as he communicates,” Mrs. Roberts said. She went on to say, “Maycee is so thoughtful that I could cry just thinking about it… she goes out of her way to make everyone feel included and welcome… she knows how important it is for Cris to use his iPad and communicate.” We’ll end with what Maycee had to say. When we asked her what inspires her to be so kind, her answer was simple but profound. “I just feel like there needs to be more good people in the world… and I want to be one of them,” she said. #BelieveInGC

Please help us congratulate Mike Doran as our 2nd teacher to receive the “Excellence in Teaching” award this year. Mike, who is a Navy Veteran, is a middle school teacher who focuses much of his day with students who have behavioral and emotional needs. He is absolutely fantastic at what he does! In fact, he is our districtwide trainer for de-escalation. Mike is known to be a “people person” with a great sense of humor. What’s unique about Mike is that he has the same effects on teachers and students alike. Principal Brandi Litteral describes it as, “a calming presence that is so helpful to our school.” She went on to say that his professional knowledge allows him to “jump into just about anything”, and he does! Mike is the kind of person who’s willing to help out however he can. Our Director of Special Education, Melissa Latimer, had such kind words to say about Mike as well. “He embodies the idea of relationship building… and it makes a huge difference with his students,” she said. Mrs. Latimer described how students with behavioral and emotional needs can sometimes struggle with forming relationships. Mike’s approach to teaching helps his students enjoy a learning environment that they otherwise might not. “Mike is really intentional about connecting with students and making sure they are in a good place… and those kids need that,” Mrs. Latimer said. We appreciate Mr. Mike Doran for not only doing anything he needs to do, but for going above and beyond! Great news for Monday, April 8th! Every student at school will get their own pair of glasses to view the eclipse! They will be participating in all kinds of activities, with some fun surprises to fit the theme! Each school's lunch menu will consist of eclipse-themed items including Galaxy Pizza, Sun Chips, and other awesome treats! This is a great real-world opportunity for our students to learn from. We look forward to kicking off the remaining 32 days of school with an awesome Monday! Can't wait to see our Musketeers! #BelieveInGC

Happy Easter, Musketeers!! We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful day! We also hope students enjoy their time off for spring break this week!! We send a big thank you to all of you at home who helped us with a great attendance challenge! Congratulations to the following grade levels who achieved the highest attendance on their brackets!! We’re proud to introduce the first of our 3 “Excellence in Teaching” recipients this year! Our elementary recipient of this honor is Clare Nemeth, who will be officially recognized at the award ceremony at Campbellsville University! We’re even more excited to see Mrs. Nemeth receive this award during her final year before retirement! District administrators agreed that what makes Clare so deserving of this award is a winning combination of being adaptable, consistent, and effective. When we talked to Principal Wilburn about what makes Clare special, he quickly described her as an “outstanding educator” with countless examples to back it up! He gushed over how effective Clare is as a teacher and credits it to her willingness to adapt for the sake of the students. “She’s the type of teacher who will try it one way, and if the students don’t get it, she’ll keep trying other ways,” he said. She has stepped up big time this year. While the stories would take too long to tell, trust us when we say that Clare is appreciated more than she knows! We’ll end with a final word from Mr. Wilburn: “Everything Clare is involved with is positive… it’s rare to find a teacher like her who is always willing to try new things with a smile on her face.” Congratulations, Mrs. Nemeth!! #BelieveInGC

The official dates for the last day of school and graduation have been set! At yesterday's meeting, our school board approved May 23 as the last day of school. Graduation will be May 24. #BelieveInGC

Please help us congratulate Aiden Gue for signing to University of Pikeville! He will play for UPike football as he continues his education! In all honesty, we were shocked that this signing ceremony happened — but not for any reasons you might think!! Teachers and coaches will tell you that Aiden doesn’t like the spotlight. Over the years Aiden has been the type of kid who’s actions make him shine, but he’s never been one for the attention that comes with it. He’s been the kind of person who is hard to get to smile for a celebratory picture. On this day, though, Aiden was all smiles and full of confidence as everyone was gathered to celebrate him. He was a great sport posing for photos, too! We asked Aiden, “how did we get from the shy kid who wouldn’t smile for a picture to the young man we see today who is smiling so bright?” We were amazed by Aiden’s response: “When you are around people you want to be around, you learn to show your true self and shine.” When asked if his time at GC played a part in his growing confidence, he quickly replied, “Oh yeah.” Aiden went on to say, “I’ve changed my whole mentality, just wanting to get better… to be a better person, treat people well, and make good decisions.” When we asked what football, in particular, has taught him, he said, “It’s taught me that no matter how big you are, you can make a difference.” What a great metaphor for all of us to remember! As exciting as he’s been to watch on the field, we know that Aiden makes a difference off the field as well. Good luck in your next chapter, Musketeer. We are so proud of you! #BelieveInGC

"Hey... aren't you the famous GC cowboy?!" Student stories have become our artwork, and these posters have been a great addition to the high school!! With this location being the hub of so many district-wide activities, it has been great to celebrate our students in this way! Currently, there are almost 40 of these posters already up! It's been a hit for students and visitors, alike! #BelieveInGC

This is a common sight here at GC — students engaged in some sort of activity that relates to the real world. On this crisp morning, a group of students tended to the school chickens and checked for eggs. It’s more than chickens laying eggs... it's an experience that is laying a foundation for all kinds of positive attributes. These students are learning responsibility, compassion, work ethic, and the experience of creating something out of nothing. That’s on top of the math, science, and reading that’s been required to help create and run a productive chicken coupe. We’re so proud of our students, and walk with big smiles as we see the awesome learning experiences they get to fit into their day. Thank you to our community partners who help our staff create these wonderful opportunities! #BelieveInGC

It is always so awesome to see how strong the culture of support is here at GC — so many people were excited to celebrate her success! We’re proud of you, Maddy! #BelieveInGC

It's amazing what you see when you just walk around GC! We happened to pop into Agriculture class, and a student was leading the way. When we asked what they were doing, we found out that this class is about to take a test for a veterinary science certification! That's Jalyssa, and her fellow students nominated her to help them review the endocrine system as they crunch for the big test! This is more than just practice for the real world — students who pass this test will receive a "veterinary medical applications" certification that will make them more employable and higher paid if they choose to go into the veterinary industry. Ms. Davis informed us that, historically, the majority of her students pass the test! Great job, students, and good luck with your certification! You got this! #BelieveInGC
