WE ARE FAMILY When we say we're family at Wurtland Middle School, we mean it! Today, Mr. Hall's students are taking a test. His wife, Sarah, made origami stars filled with inspirational messages. Every student received one today before his or her test. Thank you, Sarah!

LETTUCE CONTINUE TO GROW WOW. Last week, we shared the beginnings of some lettuce growing in our new grow tower that is stationed in our agriculture lab. Look at the progress after only a few days. Also, do you spy that basil? AT WMS, WE GROW TOWARD SUCCESS EVERY DAY!

SEVENTH-GRADE ELA Seventh-grade students in the classes of Katie Williams are reviewing story elements in centers this week. Everyone loves centers!

COLLEAGUE CREDIT Mrs. Vanover shares that the building principals, Brandi Litteral and Melissa Bowling, always go above and beyond to take any extras that they can off of the plates of teachers.

DRAMA STUDENT OF THE WEEK Mrs. Long shares that Hailey deserves this recognition because she comes to class every day excited and eager to practice for the upcoming play. She puts 100 percent effort into every practice, and she is always willing to take the leadership role when needed. She makes Mrs. Long very proud!

WRITER OF THE WEEK Mrs. Brumfield shares that Caitlyn does her very best on her English work both in class and on the academic team. She demonstrates what it means to be dedicated and engaged. Caitlyn is doing things WRITE at Wurtland Middle School!

WILDCAT OF THE WEEK Mrs. Brumfield shares that Ruthie is always extremely helpful to her teachers and her classmates. She doesn't hesitate to jump in when extra help is needed, from carrying things and cleaning up to assisting students in finding and completing absent work.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Our faculty, staff, and students had a wonderful and fun-filled day. Students participated in three sessions. We owe special thanks to each of our district and community partners: Amy Crum, Chelsea DeLong, Pathways, ReGroup, Appalachian Folkology, and the KYOWA Writers Group. We also owe a special note of thanks to Mrs. Shannon's and Mr. Gwinn's puppies! IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A WILDCAT!

CANDY DONATIONS: PLEASE SHARE Wurtland Elementary and Wurtland Middle are seeking donations for candy and/or distributable items to give to Wurtland students during our Trunk-or-Treat event on October 26, 2023. We do request that all candy is donated in unopened bags.

FALL IN LOVE WITH PANCAKES (AND EGGS) This week’s student-led cooking adventure in Mrs. Shannon's Hospitality and Tourism class centers on breakfast staples, eggs and pancakes. Gunner Ratcliff showed cooking expertise in his presentation of a savory duo. With this individual dish, the rest of the class got to make their own eggs and pancakes. Great job, Gunner!

IT'S SPOOKY SEASON Our EdRising students continue to work on bulletin boards throughout the building. These spooky displays are haunting! 🎃👻

LETTUCE GROW OUR OWN Lettuce feed you some hydroponic fresh lettuce, fresh from the Wurtland Middle School agriculture classes. Today, our students were working hard to transplant from flood beds to our new grow towers. We're growing our own at WMS!

WURTLAND MIDDLE HELPDESK What happens when computer problems come knocking at the door? Our helpdesk students are on the scene. They have learned how to complete multiple repairs. These ChromeBooks, for example, were sent to us by WES, and our students fixed them in a flash.

COLLEAGUE CREDIT Mrs. Vanover shares that the cafeteria staff makes the best food, and they always have smiles on their faces. They always share kind words to with both students and staff. Additionally, no matter what is asked of them, they always find ways to come through for our students. They truly are a key part of what makes WMS such a special place. We love each of you!
