Students of Mrs. Fraley’s CTE class hustled today to record info, tag, and release several recently emerged Monarch butterflies. Hopes are that they will get a head start on their migration south before tomorrow’s storms hit our area. You can learn more about our project at www.monarchwatch.org

Dear Families, We are excited to announce that McKell Middle School has launched a partnership with The Social Institute (TSI), a leader in curriculum designed to equip students to navigate the complex intersection of well-being, social media, and technology. At a time when students spend many hours a day on digital devices, and cyberbullying and reputation-damaging posts run rampant, TSI equips students to make positive, healthy, and high-character choices that fuel their health, happiness, and future success. Our school will be adopting TSI’s comprehensive program, called #WinAtSocial, which promotes character, empathy, teamwork, critical thinking, and other important life skills. Whether or not your child uses social media or a device of their own, we hope that you will consider how these free resources outlined below could be useful to your family. To be clear, the information offered through this partnership does not instruct anyone how to parent. Instead, these supplementary resources provide insight into social media, technology, and student experiences, offering family discussion prompts and informative resources that you can incorporate into family conversations as much or as little as you like. How Your Family Can Participate: Continue the conversation at home: As students experience #WinAtSocial each month, Family Huddle questions may be emailed to you by the school as a supplement to a lesson. These are completely optional to run as a family! Register your free account for The Social Toolkit. Many families refer to this as the CliffsNotes of social media and technology! Go to the Toolkit, click Activate Account, and enter our school code: 2ad3F33B5D246A We are excited to be able to offer this important and timely education to our community. If you have any questions, please let me know. Sincerely, Joanna Zaph McKell Middle School Counselor

Mrs. Smiths health class used eggshells to represent the enamel of our teeth. They left an egg in five different liquids for 24-hours to represent the sugar/liquid sitting on your teeth without brushing. They used orange juice, strawberry milk, and various pop/soda. They took the eggs out after 24 hours and brushed them with water first and then toothpaste to see the difference.

Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Cattell’s Agriculture classes did a taste test comparing fresh sweet corn to canned corn. Then they helped MMS cooks by shucking corn for Friday’s lunch. We want to thank Luke Collier and his family for the donation of the corn!! Also we couldn't have done it without or fantastic kitchen crew. They are always willing to help out our kids!

Mrs. Fraley’s Career class is currently participating in an Entomology course. Students are collecting Monarch eggs and larva and raising Monarch butterflies in the classroom. They are participating in the Monarch Watch program and each student will be placing a small sticker on each Monarch and releasing the butterfly. Each tag has specific numbers that students will record and enter on the Monarch Watch website. This tag information allows the butterfly to be tracked and to gain knowledge of their migration. Students are also acting as entomologists to gather specimens for an insect collection. They each are responsible for collecting, mounting, identification, and research on an insect. Stayed tuned for photos of our butterflies!

Parents and Guardians: We are pleased to inform you that administration of the Kentucky Incentives for Prevention (KIP) Youth Survey will resume in fall 2024! Kentucky’s Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities, Division of Substance Use Disorder supports implementation of KIP, our state’s largest source of data related to youth use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. KIP also addresses mental health, bullying, school safety, and other risk and protective factors associated with youth behavioral health. In 2021, over 93,000 students representing 127 school districts completed the survey, and the findings provided an invaluable substance use prevention and health promotion tool for those communities. Please let us know if you have any questions! KIP SURVEY LETTER LINK: https://docs.google.com/.../1IQKlBn8mbIqboRL.../edit...
